The ancient Mayan tribes used cacao to make a hot drink that was of great importance to them as a celebratory drink and a direct initiation into the spirit world. Here's a simplified recipe for making Mayan-style hot chocolate:
Ancient Mayan hot cocoa recipe
Ingredients
2 teaspoons of cocoa
1-2 teaspoons of honey or sugar
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla or cinnamon
a pinch of salt
a pinch of cayenne pepper
1 cup milk (you can also use plant-based milk, such as coconut or almond milk)
Cooking instructions
Put the milk in a saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it is ready.
Add grated cocoa, honey or sugar, vanilla or cinnamon, a pinch of salt and cayenne pepper to the milk, mix well.
Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it begins to boil.
Pour the drink into a cup and enjoy aromatic hot chocolate.
The Indians brewed cocoa very thick: the grains were ground, mixed with water and spices: cinnamon, cloves, cayenne pepper. They also added corn flour - for nutrition and thickness. They drank the drink cold and whipped to foam.
May it taste just as it tasted to the ancient Mayan tribes!
